During the first session I will take some details from you including contact details, GP and an emergency contact number. We will then discuss what has brought you to counselling and what you would like to achieve. It doesn’t matter if you don’t know all the answers to these questions – a valid part of our work could be to work out what you want to change in your life.
The first session gives us the opportunity to decide whether we want to work together. It gives you the opportunity to ask any questions you might have about counselling and enables me to decide whether I can offer the appropriate degree of support or whether you would benefit more from a different or more specialized approach, in which case I can refer you to a colleague.
I currently practise in Appleby.
How long is a session and much does it cost?
Sessions last 50 minutes. The first session costs £20 and further sessions £35. The fee is payable at each session, by cash or cheque.
How often do we meet and how many times will I need to come?
Ideally, I would expect us to meet weekly. It might be appropriate, as therapy progresses, to reduce the frequency of sessions to fortnightly. Sometimes, people feel the need for additional sessions. I also understand that finances can be a significant factor and we can review this as we progress so that we make the right decision for you.
As for how many sessions you need; this depends on the nature and severity of the issues we are dealing with and at what pace you feel comfortable working. Some people resolve their issues in a matter of weeks, whereas some take months or years.
What if I need to cancel?
If you need to cancel, you can text me or give me a call. If you cancel at least 48 h before the session, no fee is payable. If you cancel with less than 48 h notice, the full fee is payable.
Do I need a referral from my GP?
No, there is no need for a referral.
